Megan Barber King is a visual artist who creates encaustic and assemblage artworks that tell stories. She is inspired by the power of lost images, discarded objects, and nature to spark our imaginations, help us understand ourselves and our world, and empathize with others.
Working primarily in encaustic, a wax-based painting medium, Megan creates work that is both visually appealing and tactile. "I enjoy the process of layering and blending wax to create complex and layered images, but it is the burning in or torching that truly excites me." In the process of fusing the wax, you destroy and create at the same time.
Megan often combines found objects, to create artworks that tell stories. She is drawn to the unique histories and personalities of found objects, and enjoys the challenge of finding ways to combine them in unexpected and meaningful ways. She also uses antique and vintage images as a starting point to create new stories. She imagines the lives of the people in these images, and is inspired by the stories that they tell.
Megan Barber King lives in Washington, DC with her husband, her youngest daughter & her studio hound, Layla.
