"The world around us is an amazing playground of opportunities that I tap into for my artistic creations. Paper is fascinating – particularly paper that has been discarded. Fold it, cut it, twist it, add some glue – it becomes art instead of garbage. There are mountains of old books that will never be read again and I enjoy giving them a new life. Certainly, vintage and antique status books are collected and protected, but there are also many, many other books that are just poorly written, poorly researched, or outdated. Many books end up in the landfill; even items in the recycling stream can end up in landfills – often overseas, transferring the volume of waste to another location.
"My 3D sculptures are created from damaged and discarded books using various book folding techniques. In creating my sculptures, I choose the book based on its size or shape, the page colors, the placement and size of the text, or by matching the title to an image. In addition to books, I incorporate other items destined for the landfill including mirrors, frames with missing glass, wall tiles, and plates.
