Marilyn Hower is a 1975 graduate of Wake Forest University and earned a BA in Studio Art from Emory and Henry College in 2009. She has worked as a quilt instructor, lecturer, resident artist, art museum curator and artist for almost 40 years. Marilyn lives in the Blue Ridge mountains of southwest Virginia where she maintains a private studio practice.

"I am fascinated with the geometric shape of the circle and its many abstract forms. For 25 years I have made art using whole circles, sections of circles, and also open, closed, partially hidden, or fractured circles. I try to integrate the many pieces I cut by hand into an abstracted whole.

"Each imperfect, organic, circle-based shape in my compositions holds personal meaning for me. As a whole they represent intuition, non-linear thought and memory, illness and recovery, life cycles, and rhythms of the universe. They are the eyes of intuition, awareness, clarity and truth. Through them you will hear my voice and the articulation of my dreams.

"Stitched, quilted compositions are my primary medium. I machine piece and quilt cotton fabrics with cotton threads because I've used these materials and tools since childhood. They represent my lifelong passion for making art with fiber. " --Marilyn Hower
